Mandelson - another row
The aftermath of a very problematic appointment
In December 2024, Lord Mandelson was appointed as UK Ambassador to the United States of America - (Government announcement). This was undoubtedly the decision of the Prime Minister. No attempt to deflect responsibility for that on to others (e.g. civil servants) can alter that basic fact.
Previous articles about Mandelson’s appointment are - Peter Mandelson sacked - and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer survives the Mandelson furore.
The government’s 2024 announcement stated -
There is now a big political row following the revelation, by The Guardian newspaper, that Mandelson actually failed the required security vetting process but, nonetheless, the Foreign Office permitted the appointment to proceed - see Revealed: Mandelson failed vetting but Foreign Office overruled decision | Peter Mandelson | The Guardian.
The Prime Minister claims that he did not know about this until the story appeared in the news.
Already, the top civil servant in the Foreign Office (Sir Olly Robbins) has been forced out of his post by the government.
My previous article concerning Mandelson ended by saying - “Starmer may have survived, at least for now, but there are major challenges ahead.”
Will he survive this latest row?
If it emerges that Starmer did, in fact, mislead Parliament then he is likely to be in serious trouble. Precisely what happened may emerge over the next few days.
The political vultures are already circling. Whilst Starmer is not generally popular, this is not the time to force his resignation. The military conflicts in Iran and Ukraine demand as much stability as possible in the UK.

A letter from Sir Chris Wormald (Cabinet Secretary) to Simon Hoare MP (Chair, Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee) - 30 October 2025 - 2025-10-30 CabSec to PACAC final.docx. The letter describes (in outline) the process used to appoint Mandelson.
Wormald was Cabinet Secretary from December 2024 until February 2026. The post is now held by Dame Antonia Romeo.
